boiler scrappage scheme with british gas - is is a good idea?
hi
just head about this boiler scrappage scheme, i have an ancient boiler, and last year somehow ended up signing with british gas homecare boiler service cover, paying £17 a month.british gas support this scrappage scheme and are also offering a further £400 discount from british gas themselves…i have 2 question:
1-has anyone else gone for this scrappage scheme, is it a good idea, is there a catch?
2-as i have an existing service plan with them, would british gas install boiler free??
The boiler scrappage scheme is available to every, some deduct the £400 off the invoice, some companies invoice you and fill in a form which you send away and get the £400 paid into your bank account.
The government give a £400 discount if you have an old G rated boiler, but only a few companies do this, and they are the most expensive.
I have had my boiler changed recently. I used a local central heating company, they charged me £1450. less £400 scrappage scheme, total £1050.
I would never use British Gas, through bad experience, everyone I know who used BG had bad experiences and very expensive.
All the companies offering the maximum £800, were too expensive to start, even after deducting the £800, they were still more expensive than some local companies without the scrappage scheme.
Get as many estimates and references as possible before you decide, But keep away from BG.

See here to find out why it might not be the best option. No BG will not install free and often are quite expensive compared to a local heating company. Get quotes and work out your options.
I think the answer Paul has given and the link provided just about says it all. BG are certainly not the cheapest and many people still think of them as the ‘one and only’ which they certainly are not.
